What is the fxp interface

fxp is the Intel EtherExpress pro (and compatible) range of NIC cards as viewed by FreeBSD. Other ethernet cards have different names. This is a specific FreeBSD format. If you were to install a NE2000 in an Olive, that would be edX. Linux, on the other hand, calls all ethernet cards ethX and Solaris calls them hmeX.

The fxp repersents the management and internal ethernet interface in the Juniper router.
JUNOS sets up the software for 3 interfaces initially:
-fxp0 is an out-of-band-management interface (Ethernet mgmt port)
-this interface must be explicitly configured
-fxp1 is an internal Ethernet interface & connects the Routing Engine to the Packet Forwarding Engine.
  -this interface is not configurable
  -lo0 is the loopback interface
-this interface must be explicitly configured

There are some good documents online at www.juniper.net that describe many
  technical questions.
